Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home offers several types of funeral services. Before choosing a funeral service,
take in consideration the needs of each individual family member and the many options available to
your family. It may help family members to have a viewing type of funeral service to begin the
healing process. The body present serves as a focal point for mourners and helps them acknowledge
the reality of death. Whatever type of service you choose, our staff will coordinate every detail
for you, giving you more time to concentrate on family and friends. Our commitment to personal care
is backed by our Service Guarantee - if you're not completely satisfied with any part of our service,
we'll refund that portion.
Traditional Funeral Services
A traditional funeral service is when your loved one is present. Generally visitation is held the
day or night before the funeral. The funeral service itself is held the following day in either
our funeral home, church or special place chosen by the family. Funerals often consist of scripture
readings, prayers, a eulogy, sometimes a sermon and music. After the funeral, there is a procession
to the cemetery for a committal service. The graveside service may be followed by a reception in our
Fellowship Hall, church or other gathering place.
Memorial Services
A Memorial Service is held when the deceased is not present. It may take place at our funeral home,
a church or another place chosen by the family. This is a time to remember a loved one through
fellowship with friends and family. The memorial service can also be an addition to a traditional
funeral service. For instance, having a traditional funeral service here, and then a memorial service
back in the deceased hometown.
On-site Cremation Services
Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home is Yankton's only funeral home with an on-site crematory. Our recently installed crematory serves those families who prefer to use cremation as part of their
services. Cremation is often accompanied by the rites and ceremonies of traditional funerals or
memorial services. Final disposition options include earth burial, entombment and scattering. Some
families keep cremated remains in an urn or other container.
Aftercare Services
Our aftercare services are available every day, and our "Health Healing" support groups convene
in the evenings for those who need an extra measure of comfort. These special support groups, led
by Reverand Dr. Paul M. Opsahl, meet during the months of March through May and September through
November. You may also take advantage of the books and videos on help in healing from our
extensive aftercare and grief resource library.
