Phyllis Jean Bittner, born in Mitchell, SD to Herbert and Esther (Schortzmann) Bittner on September 27, 1940 and grew up on a farm south of Menno (the corner of Hwy 46 and Stone Church Rd). She attended Odessa country school through the 8th grade. Soon after, as a young teenager she left home & worked as a live-in Nanny for a couple in Yankton, taking care of their two young children. She married Layton Woehl in June 1958. Together they lived on the Woehl family farm south-west of Menno where Layton grew up. Phyllis was a stay at home Mom while Tim and Lori were little. She later worked at various places in Menno: Maddy's Lounge, Vern's Beer Garden, Legion Hall and the Schnitzelbank and at a sewing factory in Freeman; Hunter's Specialties. In 1999 they sold the farm and moved to Yankton where she worked for a short time at M-tron Industries until Layton's health required her care full-time. She took care of him in their home until his passing in January 2002. She gave generously of her time and talents. Always helping friends and family with mending, cleaning, rides to and from doctor appointments or a ride to school. She was lovingly called an Angel on Earth. She learned block-style quilting from her buddy Dan. She enjoyed embroidery, reading romance novels, collecting Eagles and Snowmen and attending YHS Football and Wrestling. Her pride and joy were her two Grandsons Matthew and Dane Wiedmeier. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 3 days after her 70th birthday. When treatment proved to cause more harm than good and quality of life outweighed quantity, she discontinued treatment and moved to Sr. James Care Center & Avera Hospice Care. The world truly is a better place because of her laughter and the light that she brought to it.
She is survived by her son Son Tim (Twila) Woehl - Wakonda, Daughter Lori (Todd) Wiedmeier - Yankton; Grandsons Matthew and Dane Wiedmeier - Yankton; Sister Laverna (Roy) Ulmer - Yankton; Brother Merlin (Sue) Bittner - Minn., MN; Brother-in-law Dale (Josie) Herrboldt - IAl; Sister-in-law Shireen Woehl - Aiken, MN; Her Aunts, cousins nieces and nephews; Best friends Norma and Dan; Friends and staff at Sr. James Cabin 1.
