Arlin "Chuck" Wiese, age 86 of Yankton, SD and member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Yankton, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2009 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Steve Weispfennig officiating. Burial will be Wednesday in the Riverview Cemetery, Centerville, SD at approximately 1:45 PM with military graveside rites by Frank Holcombe American Legion Post #43 of Centerville, SD. Visitations will be 3-8 PM, Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a prayer service at 6:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Neitzke, Derek Remund, Christopher Remund, Joshua Eide, Andrew Eide, Benjamin Eide, and Jeremey Neitzke. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Neitzke, Randy eide, Dan Remund, Steve Welsh, Charles Shogren, and Jeremiah Welsh.
Arlin Charles Wiese, also known as Chuck Wiese, was born on March 24, 1923,to Gustave and Mary Rist Wiese, in their farmhouse outside of Centerville, SD. In 1940 he graduated from Centerville High School, where he met his sweetheart and future wife. He went on to Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD for one year, then to Chillicothe Business College in Missouri for one year, then to University of South Dakota in Vermillion for one year.
He joined the US Army Reserve in October 1941 with Navy preference, which accepted him and sent him to Minot State College in North Dakota for a semester, where he became a midshipman. From there he was sent to Harvard for Navy training in accounting for a semester. He joined the USS O'Flaherty at Enewetak in the Pacific Ocean in 1943. He was a Lieutenant JG, and his position was Supply Officer and Paymaster. Chuck was honorably discharged from the service in 1946. He went back to the University of South Dakota and graduated with a BA in Business in December of 1947, after which he joined Greenlee's Furniture Store in Yankton. When Greenlee's closed in 1973, he joined Hatch Furniture until 1995 when he retired.
Chuck married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Lenore Frey, on August 11, 1946. They moved to Yankton in 1948, and have lived there ever since, where they have been members of St. John's Lutheran Church for more than 60 years.
Several years ago, Chuck acquired a small farm outside of Centerville, SD, which became a hobby for him. Almost every weekend he would go to the farm for tree removal and fencing - the type that would restrain livestock. He was known for making the straightest and tightest fences around.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Evelyn Wiese Shogren, Florence Wiese Welsh, brother Ralph Wiese, nephew David Shogren, and son-in-law Mike Neitzke.
He is survived by his wife Elaine, three daughters, Jacqueline (Mike) Neitzke, Robin (Dan) Remund, and Rebecca (Randy) Eide, seven grandsons Jeremey Neitzke, Jeffrey Neitzke, Derek Remund, Christopher Remund, Joshua Eide, Andrew Eide, and Benjamin Eide, one great-grandson, Jackson Neitzke, and many nieces and nephews whom he enjoyed so much. Chuck loved playing cards with his grandsons, especially Hearts and Poker, and according to Chuck, he hardly ever lost.
