Edna V. Starr, age 93, of Yankton, passed away Friday, December 30, 2011 at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Monday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Edna Foley was born November 3, 1918 in the Mayfield community on a farm to John and Kate Foley. She was the youngest of seven children. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Fairview, SD. There she went to school and played basketball on one of the first girl's teams in South Dakota.
Edna married Richard Bert Starr on May 5, 1939 at Haywarden, SD. To this union four children were born, Richard (Dick) Jr., Catherine Ann, James and David. They all moved to Yankton in 1948.
Edna loved to play cards and was active in many organizations over the years. Some of them included: the Royal Neighbors of America, The Moose, Catholic Daughters, the Altar Society, the Women's Relief Corp and The Center. She was also an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She worked at Sacred Heart Laundry, Fantles Restaurant and the lunch program at the Yankton school system.
She enjoyed being at home and made some of the best homemade bread you could ever find. She was a great cook and always welcomed company. Edna made the best divinity, no bake cookies and lot of goodies.
Edna is survived her sons; James (Karen) Starr of Yankton, SD and David Starr of Centerville, SD; one son-in-law, Don Rollag of Springfield, MO; three grandsons, Patrick (Emily) Starr of Sioux Falls, SD, Kenneth Starr of Elk River, MN and Timothy (Bev) Starr of Tea, SD; four great-grandchildren, Avery and Angela of Sioux Falls, SD, and Megan and Mason of Elk River, SD;a special niece, Mary Brown of Junction City, KS, as well as, many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1987, son Richard Jr., daughter Catherine Ann, and all six of her brothers and sisters.
