Mary Evelyn Slowey, age 91 of Yankton passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, SD with Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories. Visitations will be from 4-9 PM, Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM rosary followed by a 7:30 PM Scripture service.
Mary Evelyn was born on April 13, 1920 to Matt and Minnie (Erickson) Nooney near Irene, SD. On April 6, 1942, she was united in marriage to Leon Slowey at St. Columba Catholic Church in Mayfield, SD. They farmed in the Mayfield area until 1968, when they moved into Yankton. She was employed at Gurneys for a short time, and then worked with Leon at Mount Marty College until 1982. She then worked part time at the Library Restaurant. She was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church and the Altar Society and while in Yankton she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Those who will cherish her memory are her sons, Gary (Yvonne) Slowey of Yankton, SD; daughters: Judy Jensen of Irene, SD and Mary (Leslie) Marek of Yankton, SD; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon in 1985, her parents and three brothers: Joe, Tom, and Bob Nooney and son-in-law, Duane Jensen.
