Valeria K. Shade, age 90, of Yankton, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Peace Presbyterian Church, Yankton with Revs. Marilyn and Nelson Stone officiating. Burial will be approximately at 1:45 PM at the Hurley Cemetery, Hurley, SD. Visitations will be from 4-9 PM, Friday, September 25, 2009 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton with the family present from 7-9 PM and a 7:30 prayer service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Valeria Knock was born September 8, 1919 to parents Andy B. & Anna (Smith) Knock in rural Davis, SD. She attended grade school at Freiling rural school and high school in Davis. Valeria attended Sioux Falls College for two years and then transferred to University of South Dakota, Vermillion where she completed her Bachelor's degree in Home Economics. In early years of teaching she taught at Calumet, IA, Viborg, Irene, Centerville, and Brandon, SD.

She married Jerry M. Shade on December 15, 1946. They moved to Ogden, UT in 1957. She continued to teach home economics at Weber County Schools, Ogden, UT until her retirement.

Jerry and Valeria moved to Yankton, SD in 1995. They enjoyed traveling in their motor home during their retirement years spending time with family and friends. Valeria enjoyed many different activities including cooking, sewing and quilting. She was known for her delicious homemade chocolates, peanut brittle, bread and rolls. She was active in the Eastern Star, White Shrine and retired teachers' group. She was a member of Peace Presbyterian Church, Yankton.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry M. Shade, of Yankton, SD; her sons: Kim Shade, Medora, ND, Alan Shade and his wife Karen, Davis, SD; grandchildren: Carie Shade, Dickinson, ND, Travis Shade, Kansas City, MO, Audra Shade, Dickinson, ND, Courtney Shade, Davis, SD; great grandsons : Aydan, Quincy, and Daine Rome and Tanner Harrison; Diane Coe, mother of Carie, Travis and Audra, three nieces: Sondra Stickney and husband Frank, Elk Point, SD, Sheran Cramer, Omaha, NE, and Judith Bates and husband Steve, Omaha, NE, and many other relatives and friends.

Valeria was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ben and William Knock.
