Sylvester J. Schaefer, age 87, of Yankton, died early Sunday morning, September 20, 2009 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Bob Lacey officiating. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Menominee, NE at approximately 12:30 PM. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM, Tuesday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a scripture service at 7:30 PM. Pallbearers will be Ron Schroeder, Pat Zavadil, Steve Zavadil, Darrell Hoesing, Gary Schaefer, and Danny Schaefer.
Sylvester was born on April 21, 1922, to Henry and Theresa Schaefer at home in Fordyce, NE. He attended St. Bonafice School in Menominee, NE until 8th grade and then began working on the family farm. Sylvester married Evelyn Thoene on April 28, 1942 at St. John the Baptist Church, Fordyce, NE. They lived and farmed near Menominee, NE. Sylvester also worked part time at Stockman's Livestock in Yankton, SD. He began working full time upon their move off the farm and into Yankton in the fall of 1981. Sylvester enjoyed the game of baseball. It was his pastime, whether playing or coaching, which he did for many years in Menominee. The Minnesota Twins were his favorite professional team and he spent many evenings cheering them on.
Thankful for sharing his life are his wife of 67 years Evelyn of Yankton, his daughter Shirley Kast and husband Lawrence of Fordyce, NE; three granddaughters: Susan Uken and husband Randy of Brandon, SD; Christy Carda and husband Brett of Yankton; Sharon Kraft and husband John of Yankton; five great grandchildren: Cody Uken, Jack and Piper Carda, Ryan and Tyler Kraft; two sisters: Mildred Schroeder of Crofton, NE; Rita (Wilfred) Zavadil of Fordyce, NE; brother Harold (Helen) Schaefer of Yankton; sister-in-law Fern Schaefer of Yankton; brother-in-law Dellano Hoesing of Yankton and several nieces and nephews.
Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Joseph; three sisters: Sister Maxine Schaefer OSB, Mary Hoesing and Theresa Schaefer; brother Ralph Schaefer and brother-in-law Roman Schroeder.
