Verda Marie (Nelsen) Richmond, age 85 of Yankton died Monday, October 05, 2009 after a long illness at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Verda was born at Viborg, SD on October 17, 1923 to Abel and Minnie (Beck) Nelsen. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith.
She graduated from Volin High School in 1942. She married George Freddie Richmond on March 17, 1943 at Pocatello, Idaho. She worked at various jobs in Yankton and was a 25 year employee at Gurney's Seed and Nursery and was named Employee of the Year. She retired in 1989. She was a 50 year member of the Women of the Moose, VFW Women's Auxiliary and Women's Relief Corp Auxiliary of the GAR.
She is survived by two daughters: Patricia Richmond Miller and Linda Richmond Scott (Mike), all of Yankton, SD; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren: Jean Miller Degroot (Brian), Yankton, Nancy Miller Geersen (Paul) and children, Claire and Will, Denver, CO, Barbara Miller Jacobson (Todd) and daughter, Sophie, Sioux Falls, SD, Jeff and Steve Miller, Denver, CO, Alison Sandau and children, Brittny, Natalie, Caleb, Chris, and Alyssa, LeMars, IA, Kyle Sandau (Liz) and daughter, Eva of Mukilteo, WA, Rebecca Heier and Chad Kaiser and son, Alex of Mission Hill, SD, John Scott (Gillian) and children, Andrew, Ben, Cameron, and Dillan, Yankton, SD, and Matt Scott (Kendra) and daughters, Abby and Audrey, Rapid City, SD; one brother, Gary Nelsen (Muriel), Rockford, IL; son-in-law, Neil Heier, Gayville, SD; sisters-in-law: Betty Nelsen, Yankton, SD and Bette Nelsen, Vermillion, SD and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Freddie in 1982, daughter, Marjorie Heier in 2005, three brothers, Curtis in 1992, Leland in 1997, and Nels in 2000, and son-in-law, Jay Miller in 1995.
