Helen Paulson, age 94, of Yankton, SD passed away Tuesday, September, 27, 2011 surrounded by all those who deeply cared for her at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, Friday, September 30, 2011 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Lulf officiating. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Gettysburg, SD at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 1, 2011. Visitations will begin at 5:30 PM, Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers are her grandsons: Casey Engel, Rod Humphrey, Beau Paulson, Jason Rye, Scott Conway, Jake Williams, Mike Humphrey and Tyler Engel. Honorary pallbearers are the many people whose lives she touched in so many ways.

Helen Marie Billings was born August 19, 1917 in Yankton, SD to Arthur and Mary Anna (Schmitz) Billings. As a young child, her family moved to Gettysburg, SD where she lived until she returned to Yankton in June of 1976 when she and her husband Lawrence semi-retired. Helen graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1937, and was married to Lawrence Paulson on June 26, 1937.

Helen worked as a clerk at Red Owl, Doughnut World, Shriver's and then she chose a different path to follow and became an in home care giver. She continued to care for young children until her illness forced her to retire to Yankton Care Center in February, 2008. Helen had a very strong love of the Lord, kids and potato salad. She loved to garden, crochet, knit, visiting with her many friends, singing hymns, playing cards, scrabble and dominos, and being able to do whatever she could to help others.

Helen was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Benedictine Oblates, Church Women United, Yahweh-Shalom Prayer Group, Cursillo, and volunteered at the Banquet and the Yankton Care Center.

She is survived by her children and their families: Diane Blankenship, Des Moines, IA, Steve (LeAnne), Yankton, SD; Warren (Judy), AZ , Lora Lea Rye (Verlyn), Irene, SD, Cindy Grohs, Scotland, SD; brother, Thomas Billings, KY; sister-in-law, Monica Billings, Yankton, SD. She also has 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren, great grandchildren and many others who consider her Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Friend, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parent, husband, Lawrence, children, Phyllis, Robert and Donna, and 2 grandchildren, 2 brothers and 1 sister.
