 Illa Mackey, age 81, passed away at her residence in Niobrara, NE on Wednesday, September 9, 2009. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Oyate Oyanke Community Center and Our Most Merciful Savior Episcopal Church, Santee, NE with Rev. David Hussey officiating. Burial will be in the L'Eau Qui Court Cemetery, Niobrara. Visitations will begin at 2:00 PM, Friday at the Oyate Oyanke Community Center, Santee, with services at 7:00 PM Friday evening. Pallbearers will be Denny Erb, Harold Jones, Woody Roberts, Mike Thompson, Steve Neil Frazier, Terry Whipple. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and the staff and students of the Santee Community Schools.
Illa was the daugher of Joseph and Anna Lavara James and born in Santee, NE on June 21, 1928. She attended schools in Santee, NE, Center, NE, Springfield, SD, and Lawerence, KS. She was employed in the Nebraska School System and retired after 30 plus years of dedicated service. Many of those years she worked were at the Santee Community School.
Illa married Willard Mackey on September 26, 1948. Five childern were born to this union-Willard Mackey, Jr, Warren Mackey, Nancy Mackey, Ellen Mackey Roberts, and James Mackey.
She is survived by her sister Betty James Twiss, her five children, her beloved dog Cooper, 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and many extended family members. Illa was preceded in death by her husband Willard.
