Virginia O. Kast, age 87, of Yankton, SD died Monday, January 23, 2012 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, January 27, 2012, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Lulf officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will begin at 5 PM, Thursday, January 26, 2012, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, SD, with a rosary at 7 PM, the VFW Women's Auxiliary service at 7:15 PM and a Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren: Traci Hanel, Stacy Lorenzen, Chad Becker, Kristy Poppe, Amy Haselhorst, Trisha Dohn, Abby Lauck, Mandy Eckmann, and Brian and Mike Thunker
Virginia "Ginny" O. Kast was born August 18, 1924 at her home near Fordyce, NE to Bernard and Teresa (Schumacher) Jansen. She was the eldest of 6 girls and attended several rural schools before moving to western Nebraska. Ginny graduated from McGrew High School in Nebraska. She worked in Colorado until returning back to Fordyce, NE to marry George Kast.
Their marriage took place in Menominee, NE on February 12, 1946. George and Ginny farmed near Menominee, NE until they retired in 1981, and moved to Yankton, SD.
Ginny was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton and the VFW Women's Auxiliary. She did volunteer work at the Human Services Center, St. Benedict Church, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital and the VFW Auxiliary. Her hobbies were bird feeding, art, painting, reading and following politics. She had a great love for her family, and thoroughly enjoyed traveling the US and Europe. Ginny wrote her memoirs in 2003 as a gift to her children and grandchildren.
She leaves behind three daughters: Nancy (Ron) Becker of Omaha, NE, Connie (Garry) Moore of Yankton, SD, and Terri (Dale) Thunker of Yankton, SD; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four sisters: Miriam Henderson of Sacramento, CA, Jodie Arnold of Grand Island, NE, Milly Roeseler of Omaha, NE and Barbara Doyle of Annandale, VA.
Ginny is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George Kast, sister, Alice Gulzow, two infant brothers, and 10 brothers and sisters-in-law.
