Alice Jensen, age 91, of Yankton, SD died Saturday, December 31, 2011, at Avera Sr. James Care Center in Yankton. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Tim Lange officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will begin at 5:00 PM, Tuesday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a Rosary at 7 PM and Scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Michael Mayer, Matthew Mayer, Lynn Eckmann, Dennis Rous, Leonard Cap and Duane Wenzlaff. Honorary pallbearers are all retirees from JC Penny and those of the Antique Auto Association.
Alice Jensen was born July 20, 1920 to William and Mary (Walloch) Tank in Bon Homme County near Tabor, SD. She attended both grade school and high school in Utica, SD. She finished high school in Yankton, SD and graduated in 1938.
After graduation she did housework at the Hogan residence and worked one year at Gurney's Seed & Nursery. Alice then went to work at JC Penny as a clerk for 38 years. She married Merlin Jensen on February 27, 1946 in Yankton, SD.
She is survived by her daughter Jolene (Jim) Merkwan of Tabor, SD, granddaughter Jill (Lynn) Eckmann of Norfolk, NE, grandsons Michael and Matthew Mayer of Sioux Falls, SD, and great-granddaughters Emma Eckmann and McKinley Mayer.
