Josephine Holonbek, age 99 of Yankton passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at the Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial was at the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6:30-9:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a 7:30 p.m. rosary followed by an 8:00 p.m. Scripture service.

Josephine (Jo) was born April 22, 1910 in Dolton, SD to Frank and Rosella (Nugent) Kappenman. She was baptized and confirmed in the Dolton Catholic Church. Josephine taught in the Yankton country school system for several years before marrying Clarence Holonbek of Yankton, SD. Clarence and Josephine had two children, Charles and Jo Ann.

Josephine was an active member in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and with the Sacred Heart Alter Society. She and her husband, Clarence, were long time members of the Elks Lodge and Moose organizations.

On April 22, 2009 Josephine took great pride and joy in telling everyone at the conclusion of her ninety-ninth birthday party that, "she would see everyone next year, for when you're ninety nine years old, she said, what's another year."

Pallbearers were Tim Donelan, Bob Gordon, Larry Gordon, Paul Gordon, Tom Gordon, Tom Guidarelli, Brian Hofer, Sean Hofer, and Edward Thornton. Honorary pallbearers were Cheryl Donelan, Sister Pam Donelan, Lowell Ganger, Diane Gordon, Cathy, Gordon, Ken Gordon, Steve Gordon, Susan Holonbek, Pat Kappenman, and Annelle Reynolds.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, and brother, Fred Kappenman, and sisters, Ethel McGinnis, Belle Kappenman, Lorraine Griak, Mildred Hofer, and Mary Ganger.

Josephine's life and the beautiful memory of it will be cherished by her daughter, Jo Ann Holonbek, Minneapolis, MN, three loving and faithful sisters, Lucille Donelan and Rosalyce Gordon, both of Montrose, SD, Rita Mae Heumiller of Salem, SD, and many kind and generous nieces and nephews.
