Maynard V. Hofer, age 73, of Yankton, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, January 15, 2010 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Dave Gunderson of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery, Menno, SD at approximately 2:00 PM on Friday. Military rites will be by Ernest Bowyer VFW Post 791 of Yankton. Visitation will be 5 to 8 PM, Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM prayer service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel. Pallbearers will be Al Ulmer, Gerry Hora, Dave Schmidt, Jay Hofer, Steve Hofer, Tim Hofer, Travis Hofer and David Hofer. Honorary pallbearers will be Maynard's grandchildren and great-grandsons.

Maynard was born on October 8, 1936 to John D. and Elsie (Bezug) Hofer in Dolton, SD. He lived to the age of 73 years, 3 months and 3 days. He was baptized on January 31, 1937 and confirmed on March 2, 1958 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Freeman, SD. He graduated from Bridgewater High School on May 24, 1954. On September 8, 1955, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He received an honorable discharge on August 21, 1957.

Maynard married Adeline Fischer on September 14, 1959 in Laverne, MN. To this union four children were born: Randy, Rick, Ron and Penny Joy.

His first job was working as a gas station attendant at Stanley Corner. Maynard worked for 38 years in the dairy industry beginning first at Farmers Dairy and Produce of Freeman, SD, then AMPI, Neu Cheese of Hartington, NE, Mid Am and Dairy Farmers of America before retiring in August of 1998. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Yankton since January 18, 1994 where he served as an usher. He was also a member of the Yankton VFW. We will greatly miss you. You were a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who had a heart of gold, bigger than life. Your sense of humor we will remember forever.

Maynard's memory will be cherished by his wife of 50 plus years, Adeline "Mrs H."; sons: Randy (Lisa) Hofer of Sioux Falls, SD, Rick Hofer of Huron, SD and Ron (Tisha) Hofer of Yankton; daughter, Penny Joy "P.J" Hofer of Broken Arrow, OK; grandchildren: Victoria, Travis, Jill, Jamie "Bird", Karissa, Chelsea "Bug" and Seth Allen; great-grandsons: Joshua John and Darryl Brayden; brothers: JaVern (Mae) Hofer of Dimock, SD, Dale (Jackie) Hofer of Parkston, SD, Tommy Hofer of Weatherford, TX and Tony Hofer of Bridgewater, SD; sisters: Diane (Harvey) Hofer of Freeman, SD, Marge (Steve) Sievers of Bridgewater, SD, Sylvia (Merlin) Hofer of Parkston, SD, Belva (Sam) Wudel of Yale, SD, Patty (Ed) Dietrichs of Denison, TX and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his infant brother, Donald.

The family requests that memorials be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, 1009 Jackson St, Yankton, SD 57078.
