Charles Hertz, age 57 of Menno, SD, died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 7, 2009 in rural Menno. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno with Rev. Brad Danielson officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5:30-7:30 PM, Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Dave Bender, Todd Hertz, Dan Hertz, Mike Hertz, Kelly Hertz and Tom Ulmer. Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Bouska, Pete Johnson, Steve Weiland, Greg Mandler, Monty Mandler, Jim Herman and his brothers.

Charles was born on October 20, 1952 in Viborg, SD to Elmer and Joyce Hertz. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Menno. He graduated from Menno High School in 1970. He graduated from Southeast Tech in 1992 and was employed as a draftsman at Johnson Engineering in Yankton.

Charles married Rhonda Massey in Freeman, SD on July 24, 1976. To this union three children were born: Aaron, Evan and Ali. Charles loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He was a self-taught bird enthusiast and played the guitar. His favorite pastime was being on his pontoon and fishing the James River.

Grateful for sharing his life are his children: Aaron Charles Hertz of Austin, TX, Evan Charles Hertz of Lindsay, CA and Ali Hertz of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Taylor Aaron Hertz and Zain Anthony Hertz; parents, Joe and Joyce Heirigs of Menno; brothers: Tom Hertz, Bob Hertz, Jack Hertz and Jim Hertz and step-brothers and sisters: Henry, Ralph, Rick, Dorothy and Debbie.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer "Lefty" Hertz and his grandparents.
