Harvey F. Hansen, age 88, of Yankton, SD, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2009 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton. Memorial services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, with Rev. Dave Gunderson officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton with military graveside rites by Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791, Yankton. Visitation will be 5-8 PM, Monday, October 12, 2009 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM prayer service. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Harvey Francis was born on September 27, 1921 to Hans B. and Belle (Seddon) Hansen in Crofton, NE. He was educated in Green Island District 3 in Cedar County, NE. At the age of 10, he began living with various aunts and uncles after the death of his mother. Harvey entered and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his military service, he returned to Yankton and married Charlotte Schlueter on March 1, 1946. Harvey worked at various Standard Stations in Yankton before owning his own stations. He later worked at Beadle School before retiring at age 65.
Harvey was a lifetime member of the VFW and the Royal Order of the Cooties. He served the Yankton community as a Meals On Wheels driver and transported veterans to the veterans hospital in Sioux Falls before they had a van. Harvey also served many years as the 1st Sergeant of the Honor Guard in the Yankton area.
Harvey's memory will be cherished by his wife, Charlotte of Yankton; daughter, Constance Huber of Sioux City, IA; grandson, Christopher Brent Huber of Sioux City, IA; great-grandchildren: Christina Alexandra Huber and Joshua Brent Huber; brother, Joy (Delores) Hansen of Chicago, IL; sister, Bernice Hansen of Tucson, AZ and special friends: Bob and Deloris Gwinn, Pat and Francis McDonald, Bob and Judy Hackett, Dawn Mann, Lois Stryle and many special nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Harvey; daughter, Gail Marie; granddaughter, Dawn Huber; brothers: Irving and Luverne Hansen and sister, Evelyn Halle.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church Building Fund, 1009 Jackson St, Yankton, SD 57078.
