Harold M. Hansen, age 81, of Willow Lake, SD, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, January 5, 2008, at Southridge Health Care Center in Sioux Falls, surrounded by all of his children. He died peacefully following a short battle with cancer. Memorial services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, January 11, 2008 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Vienna, SD, with Pastor Kathy Hibbert officiating. Military Graveside Rites by the Johnny Fonken American Legion Post #113 Willow Lake, SD. Burial will be in the Pleasant Lutheran Cemetery, rural Vienna, SD. Visitations will be 5 to 7 PM, Thursday, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Vienna, SD, with the family present at 5:00 PM and a prayer service at 6:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Harold was born in Willow Lake, SD to Hans and Mildred Hansen on September 9, 1926. He grew up, lived and worked most of his life in the Vienna, Naples and Willow Lake area. He farmed for many years in rural Vienna on the family homestead farm until he retired and moved to Willow Lake. He was proud of his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Fireman 1st Class. It was a proud moment for him when he received his honorary high school diploma from Willow Lake High School in 2001.
Harold was a member of the American Legion, Post 277, and a faithful member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Vienna, SD. He enjoyed spending time with family and also with his coffee club at Myra's in Vienna, quilting at church, and playing rummy.
Grateful for having shared his life are his five children, 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The families include DuWayne and Pam Hansen, Billings, MT, and their children Brad and Dawn Hansen and their 3 children of Rapid City, SD; Brian and Amie Hansen and their child of Ulm, MT; Sue and Tom Norlen, Sioux Falls, SD and their children John and Shelly Norlen and their 2 children of Sioux Falls, SD, Heidi and Jason Schiebout and their 2 children of Sioux Falls, SD, and Trevor and Misty Norlen and their child of Welcome, MN; Lanette and Rich Hinckley, Yankton, SD and their children RaDel and Sandy Hinckley and their 2 children of Independence, MO, Renae and Josh Chesley and their 2 children of Sioux Falls, SD and Nicole and Adam Christ and their 2 children, Yankton, SD; Val and Nordean Froke of Willow Lake, SD, and their children Travis and Jessie Froke, Troy Froke, and Todd Froke, all of Sioux Falls, SD; Lori and Mike Roinstad of Yankton, SD, and special family friend, Marvin Johnson of Bryant, SD. He is also survived by one brother Robert Hansen; two sisters Gladys Jorgensen and Inger Mussock; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis, their daughter, Marlys, his parents, one brother and one sister.
