Merton W. "Mert" Gorseth, age 63, of Lancaster, NY and formerly of Yankton, SD died Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Millard Suburban Hospital, Williamsville, NY due to complications after surgery. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, February 15, 2008, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Bain officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, SD. Visitations will be 5 to 8 PM, Thursday, February 14, 2008 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mert was born September 6, 1944 to Melvin and Ida (Schlaefli) Gorseth in Yankton, SD. He attended schools in rural Irene and high school in Irene, SD. He attended College in Springfield, SD earning a four-year teaching degree. He was united in marriage to Donna Hasker on January 29, 1966 in Yankton, SD. They lived in Yankton, SD until 1998. They also lived in Shenandoah, IA; Coloma, MI; and Scottsbluff, NE. Mert worked in the nursery business his entire career. His family will always cherish his memory. Among other hobbies he loved the outdoors and hunting. He was a member of the Quarterback Club and Elks while living in Yankton. He was a member of Pheasants Forever and American Nursery Association and St. Gabriel's Catholic Church of Elma, NY.

Grateful to have shared Mert's life are his wife Donna of Lancaster, NY; son Mike and wife Kimberly of Pittsburg, PA and daughter Kris and husband Brad of Yankton, SD. His five grandchildren were an important part of his life - Jace, Reid, and Ty Binde and Tanner and Hannah Gorseth. Two brothers Don Gorseth of Lacey, WA and David (Ardis) Gorseth of Lennox, SD; sister Winifred (Bill) McKay of San Antonio, TX and five nieces and two nephews.
