Herman F. Goeken, age 95, of Yankton, died Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Avera Sacred Heart Majestic Bluffs Assisted Living Center , Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter celebrating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, with Military Graveside Rights by Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791, Yankton and SDARNG, Sioux Falls. Visitations will be from 3-9 PM, Friday, September 23, 2011 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton with a Rosary at 7:00 PM and Prayer Service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are Bernard Goeden, Norbert Goeken, Reynold Loecker, Merlin Lillie, Melvin Reifenrath and John Goeken, Jr.

Herman was the son of William and Justina (Struff) Goeken, born May 22, 1916 at West Point, NE. They moved to Petersburg and then to Crofton as a young child. He attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Crofton.

He farmed with his father until entering the service on February 22, 1942 with the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving sixteen months in India from 1944 to 1946. He was discharged on February 12, 1946.

On August 19, 1949 he married Bertha Voll Gratzfeld. He farmed the airport land in Yankton for several years and then in the Mission Hill area until 1962, when they moved to Yankton, SD. Here he worked for the City of Yankton as Foreman of the Parks Department.

He retired in 1978. His wife died April 9, 1990. He did volunteer work and was a life member of the Yankton Senior Citizens and Veterans' of Foreign Wars of Yankton, SD.

He married Frances Schramm on November 10, 1990 and they enjoyed a lot of traveling by car and motor coach.

Survivors are step-daughters: Janice (Bob) DeJong of Lesterville, SD and Darlene (Ronald) Dose of Sioux Falls, SD; stepsons: Terrence (Joanne) and Harold (Angela) all of Yankton, Rodney (Diane) Schramm of Utica, SD, Joe (Sylvia) Gratzfeld and Ed (Joanne) Gratzfeld both of Yankton, SD and Carl (Donna) Gratzfeld of Madison, SD; many step-grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews; sisters: Veronica Lillie and Mary Ann Loecker, both of Yankton, SD; and a very special friend, Odelia Ellis of Yankton, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Bertha, second wife, Frances, 5 brothers and 5 sisters.
