Milton "Mickey" Freng, age 95 of Yankton and formerly of Volin, SD passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton with Rev. Dave Lund officiating. Burial will be approximately 12:30 PM at the Faith United (Zion Lutheran) Cemetery in Volin, SD with military rites by Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791, Yankton, SD. Visitations will be from 4-8 PM, Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton. Visitations will resume one hour prior the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Larry Highland, Richard Freng, Larry Toepher, Tom Freng, Lanny Gustad and Ronald Mathison.
Mickey was born January 30, 1913 to Peter and Marie (Hoxeng) Freng on the family farm in Volin. He graduated from Volin High School. Upon graduation, he farmed with his father until 1942 when he was inducted into the Army Air Force at the age of 29. He served during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. He then returned to farming. He married Ruth Bjornebo on August 22, 1962 in Mission Hill, South Dakota. He continued to farm until his retirement in 1990 when he moved to Yankton. Ruth passed away in 1995. Mickey became a resident of the Avera Yankton Care Center in January 2006. Mickey loved to play pinochle and watch sports. He was left-handed and had a quick pace. He cherished the times he spent with his nieces and nephews especially the Sunday afternoons hitting fly balls to them. Mickey will be remembered for his open hand and heart and for always being there for his family.
Those who will cherish his memories are his sister Aves Rockwell of Missoula, MT, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruth, his brothers, Clifford, Clifford Thelmas, Sylvester and Percy, his sisters Inez Mathison and Opal Freng.
