Jean M. English, age 93 of Omaha, NE and formerly of Yankton passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at the Creighton University Medical Center, Omaha, NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, August 12, 2011 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Bob English officiating and Rev. Ken Lulf concelebrating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, IA at approximately 3:00 PM. Visitations will be from 5:00-9:00 PM Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a 7:00 PM Rosary and video tribute followed by a 7:30 Scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Dr. Eric English, Dr. Paul Taylor, Andrew Taylor, Craig Taylor, Matt Gollinger, and Pat Dell. Honorary pallbearers will be Russ Weller, Tim Dickes, Ed Krempges, and Don Moriarty.
Jean English born Nov 22, 1917 to John and Louise (Scharnweber) Drees in Carroll, IA. She was raised in Carroll, IA and attended college at the University of Iowa. She entered the business world in Omaha, NE where she worked as an investigator for Union Pacific. She met Dad in Omaha and was married in Carroll, IA. She spent her early married life in Sioux City, IA and Scotland SD where her husband was in real estate and farm management. Then in 1957 they moved to Yankton where they developed English Heights on the Lewis and Clark Lake, Holiday Hill Ski Area, Timberlane Golf Course and The Villager. In her later years, she and her husband were instrumental in developing the House of Mary Shrine which remained their major interest for the rest of their lives. Mother was also a founding member of the Rosary Makers and a fifty year member of PEO and Catholic Daughters. In addition, she was an active member of Questers and Sacred Heart Altar Society. For the past 10 years she has resided in Omaha, NE first living with her daughter and finally in Immanual Village Assisted Living. Mother enjoyed tennis and golf, hunting and fishing, hiking in nature, family gatherings, and researching family genealogy. She loved to relate family stories of her great great grandfather leading a wagon train of Catholic settlers across Iowa to establish the community of Mount Carmel, IA.
Survived by sons: Dr. E. John and Margery English, Charles and Shirley English and Fr. Robert English and daughter Jeanne and Paul Taylor; grandchildren Dr. Eric and Sally English, Janet and Pat Dell, Laurel and Matt Gollinger, Courtney English and Drs. Paul and Anh Taylor, Craig and Stacey Taylor, and Andrew and Jo Taylor; 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by husband Edward English, mother and father, Louise and John Drees, siblings, Louise Glackemeyer, JoAnn Fangman, and John Drees; niece Cathy Fangman and nephew Hank Glackemeyer.
