-Darrell Gene Nelson, age 73, of Yankton, died at his home Monday evening, February 8, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, February 12, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Mark Lichter, Rev. Louis Nollette and Rev. Neal Nollette officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton. Visitation will be 3-8 PM, Thursday, February 11, 2010 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM rosary followed by a 7:30 PM scripture service. Pallbearers will be Mark Nelson, Dan and Tony Anderson and Brent, Justin and Jana Nollette.

Darrell was born May 18, 1936, to Henry and Huldah (Holm) Nelson on a farm near Hurley, South Dakota. He married Kathryn Koupal on October 31, 1958, and together they had three daughters, Theresa, Linda and Diane. He worked as a pressman for the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan, retiring after 37 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed family gatherings where lively card games would always take place. Darrell's favorite pastimes were maintaining his pick-up and car, doing yard work, and playing ball with his two "grand-dogs," Piper and Nestle. He also enjoyed his daily coffee with friends at Paul's Kwik Stop.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Kay, of 51 years and daughters: Theresa (Tim) Nollette, Nenzel, Nebraska, Linda (Clark Throssell) Nelson, Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Diane (Matt) Schramm, Yankton. Other survivors include four grandchildren, Brent (and fiance Jennie Dickey), Justin, and Jana Nollette, and Tegyn Schramm; two sisters-in-law Martha Anderson and Marie Nelson; and many special cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Vincent, Donald, and twin brother, Dallas, and sister, Darlene Payne.

The family requests memorials to be directed in Darrell's name to Avera Sacred Heart Hospice, 501 Summit Street, Yankton, South Dakota 57078.
