Emma Marie Cervenka, age 90, of Yankton, died Saturday, December 26, 2009 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at St. Agnes (Sigel) Catholic Church, rural Lesterville, SD, with Rev. Leonard Marbach and Rev. Leonard Kayser con-celebrating. Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery at approximately 2:30 PM Wednesday afternoon. Visitations will be 4 to 8 PM, Tuesday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Darren Fuhrer, Dave Fuhrer, Tony Sees, Seth Fuhrer, Wyatt Rademacher, and Randy Fuhrer. Honorary Pallbearers will be her granddaughters: Darcie, Carrie, Amy and her great grandchildren.

Emma was born on the family farm near Hamill, SD on December 13, 1919 to Fred and Mary (Klima) Beranek. She received her primary education at the Hamill School. She married Tony Cervenka on November 10, 1942 at Winner, SD. She helped on the farm and worked at various businesses in the Winner area. Tony and Emma owned and operated the Longhorn Tavern in Colome, SD. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, often caring for her grandchildren while their parents were at work. In 1979, Tony and Emma moved to Gayville to be close to their family. At that time she worked at the local bakery and cafe. She was well known for her Kolaches and pies. On July 15, 1989 Tony died and Emma remained in her own apartment until March of 2007 when she entered the nursing home. Emma celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by her family on December 13, 2009.

Emma was a life time member of the Legion Auxiliary and Catholic Daughters of Winner, SD and St. Agnes (Sigel) Parish.

Her memory is cherished by her daughter Diane (Dick) Fuhrer of Gayville, SD; three grandchildren, Darren (Carrie) Fuhrer of Irene, SD, Dave (Amy) Fuhrer of Lesterville, SD, and Darcie (Tony) Sees of Menno, SD; 11 great grandchildren, Seth, Ashley, Randy, Miranda, Wyatt, Keely, Jacob, Autumn, Joe, Hailey, and Alex; 2 brothers, Donald and James Beranek; 1 sister Libby Hecht; and sisters-in-law Marie Holub and Agnes Veskrna and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Rosie and Mary, and granddaughter Dawn.
