Clarence E. Benck, age 89 of Yankton passed away Monday, September 26, 2011 at the Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Friday, September 30, 2011 at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton with Rev. Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be approximately 3:15 PM at the Bloomfield Cemetery, Bloomfield, NE with military graveside rites by Jessen-Meirose VFW Post #4996, Bloomfield, NE. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers are Kevin Benck, Brian Benck, James Benck, Chris Benck, Todd Edleman and Bruce Pierce
Clarence E. Benck was born at Fairfax, South Dakota on June 21, 1922 to Christian and Emma (Glaser) Benck. He moved with his family to Norfolk, NE in 1936, where he graduated from high school with the class of 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 100th Infantry Division, all of WWII, in the European Theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Clarence married Constance Skutley in Beloit, WI, December 8, 1945. They were the parents of a daughter, Lynn Stremcha. He spent most of his career as an engineer producing machinery for the pulp and paper industry. After his retirement they settled in Yankton, SD.
Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Connie; parents, Christian and Emma (Glaser) Benck; brother, Martin; son-in-law, Ronald Stremcha; grandson, Andrew Stremcha and great grandson, Wesley Robinson.
He leaves to mourn is passing, daughter, Lynn of Eau Claire, WI; granddaughters, Lisa and Christine and grandson Todd, all of Eau Claire, WI; brothers, Donald and wife, Dorothy of Bloomfield, NE, Herbert of Wichita, KS and sister-in-law, Barbara Benck of Lynch, NE, as well as 6 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
