 Elaine Barkl, age 78, of Yankton, SD, passed away at her residence on Monday, March 8, 2010 after a long struggle with Parkinson's. Funeral service will be 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 13, 2010 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Paul Josten officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton. Visitation will be 5-8 PM, Friday, March 12, 2010 at Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton with a 7:00 PM rosary followed by a 7:30 PM scripture service and video tribute. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Chris Barkl, Nick Barkl, Clint VanderPoel, Leonard Cap, Mike Kittelson and Curtis Dehl. Honorary pallbearers will be Jennifer Barkl, Chanda Mueller, Jon Barkl, Jacob Darsow, Celese Gierhart, Amy Anderson and Deb Stafford.
Elaine was born on August 8, 1931 at Menominee, NE to Clem and Magdalena (Hendricks) Tramp. She grew up on a farm near Menominee with eight brothers and sisters. Elaine married William "Bill" Barkl, Jr. on August 8, 1951 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Menominee. While Bill was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army, Elaine stayed behind working at Buhl's Cleaners and the Rainbow Cafe (currently the parking lot for Charlie's Pizza) for seven months before moving to Idaho to stay with her sister Darline. While in Soda Springs, ID, she managed the Caribou Lodge for 1 1/2 years until Bill returned from Germany.
After returning from the army, Bill and Elaine farmed on Bill's family farm west of Yankton. In 1958, they moved to a farm near Central City, IA where they lived and farmed until moving back to Yankton in 1962. They farmed together for 50 years. Elaine loved to can, cook, and bake for her family. She always grew a large garden and was well known for her wonderful produce she sold at the local farmers market which she helped establish at the Yankton Mall.
Elaine is survived by her husband, Bill; sons: Jeff (Fritzie) Barkl of Yankton and Mike (Karen) Barkl of Rapid City; daughters: Debbie (Larry) VanderPoel of Irene, SD, Julie (Wayne) Darsow of Chapman, KS and Wanda (Brian) Gierhart of Dallas, TX; 8 grandchildren: Jennifer Barkl, Clint VanderPoel, Chanda Mueller, Chris Barkl, Nick Barkl, Jon Barkl, Jacob Darsow, Celese Gierhart and 2 great-grandchildren, Brittany and Faith Coleman. She is also survived by brothers: Urban (Roberta) Tramp of Newport, OR, Melvin (Dorothy) Tramp of Afton, WY, Marvin (Shirley) Tramp of Yankton and David Tramp of Tucson, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 4 sisters: Leonarda (in childhood), Delores Kremer, Darline Dehl and Elvera Wiebelhaus, and her great-grandson, Cody Coleman.
