Robert J. Balentine, age 84 of Yankton, died Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, March 3, 2008 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with Rev. Ken Bain officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791. Visitations will be 6 to 9 PM, Sunday, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a memorial video tribute and then a scripture service at 7:30 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be sons, Jim and Mike Balentine, and grandchildren: Chad Sedlacek, Brian Sedlacek, Randy Sedlacek and Angela Bitzer.
Bob was born July 30, 1923 at Riverside, RI to Madelyn Balentine. He was baptized, confirmed, and raised in Riverside, RI. He joined the Navy in 1941 and then transferred to the Air Force in 1950. He married Ione Johnson February 3, 1945 in Minneapolis, MN. Bob retired from the Air Force after 22 years, in 1963 and the family moved to Yankton, SD. Bob worked at Bauer Electric for 14 years. He then went on the road to work at power plants in Wyoming, Montana, and Utah. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the Moose Lodge as well as the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 231 and the local Cessna 170 Association. Bob loved airplanes and loved flying his own plane.
Bob's memory is cherished by his wife Ione of Yankton, SD; sons Jim of Sioux City, IA and Mike (Pam) of Escanaba, MI; daughter Colleen (Ken) Sedlacek of Tabor, SD; six grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and sister Bette Wilson.
